Kolkata, Oct 12 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday assured transparent recruitment to state government jobs, saying his administration would not allow any irregularities that could lead to court cases over appointments.

“I promise to ensure that this government will not allow anything that paves the way for court cases in government appointments,” Adhikari told reporters after inaugurating a five-star hotel here.

Recruitment drives during the previous Trinamool Congress regime were marred by litigation, with the Supreme Court cancelling nearly 26,000 school job appointments.

“We will give error-free, competence-based appointments to the candidates,” he said, asserting that there would be no political interference in recruitment under his government.

Stating that youths must have opportunities in government jobs alongside private-sector employment, Adhikari promised one lakh jobs in the state sector within a year of his government taking office.

Adhikari, who took over as chief minister on May 9, said the first BJP government in West Bengal was working to develop the state in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.

Citing the clearance granted for Metro Railway work at the Chingrihata crossing on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, he said his government had resolved the issue within 17 days of taking office.

“The clearance was stalled by the previous government for 17 months,” he said.

With the completion of a 366-metre crucial link on the New Garia-Sector V metro corridor, trial runs have begun on the newly constructed stretch, and commercial services are expected to start by December, according to Metro Railway officials.

Adhikari also said his government had handed over most of the land required for fencing along the India-Bangladesh border to the Border Security Force (BSF) within 50 days of taking office.

He alleged that the process had been stalled by the previous TMC government since 2016.

“Our only agenda is a developed India; there is no personal or political agenda in it,” the chief minister said, adding that his government’s only goal is to ensure West Bengal plays a significant role in the country’s development.

He said that West Bengal’s prosperity will come from trade, industry and investments, asserting that people can celebrate the festivals with their family if they have work and money in their hands.

He said that a Rs 6,000 crore expansion of Haldia Petrochemicals will be inaugurated on October 14. PTI AMR MNB
