Assam govt issues 439 appointment letters, inches towards 2 lakh jobs pledge

Guwahati, October 11:  appointments made during the two terms of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government to 1,65,749.

The latest appointments bring the government closer to fulfilling its promise of providing two lakh government jobs, Chief Minister Sarma said at a ceremony held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

“For the second time in Assam, and for the first time after the BJP and its allies formed the government following the Assembly elections, we have gathered here for the distribution of appointment letters,” Sarma said.

He said the government had provided more than 1.65 lakh government jobs between 2021 and 2026, adding that the recruitment drive would continue over the next five years.

The appointments announced on Sunday cover several departments and institutions, including Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd, Labour Welfare, Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Water Resources.

“The recruitment process in Assam is fair, without any question mark, and that is why we can celebrate each of them with their parents, spouses, family members and friends,” he said.

Highlighting recruitment at Assam Co-operative Apex Bank, Sarma said the institution had once faced serious financial difficulties and the possibility of losing its Reserve Bank of India (RBI) licence. He said the bank had since recovered and attained scheduled bank status.

“We have gathered the courage to offer jobs to around 175 people in a bank that was on the verge of shutting down,” he said, adding that 526 appointments had been made at the bank during the previous term.

The Chief Minister also announced appointments for 12 insurance medical officers at Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospitals.

He said the Labour Welfare Department had completed recruitment for 338 vacancies over the past five years.

In the Public Health Engineering Department, 184 junior engineers are to be appointed. Sarma highlighted the department’s role in providing safe drinking water and implementing schemes such as the Jal Jeevan Mission.

He added that 1,173 appointments had been made in the department during the previous term.

In the Water Resources Department, Sarma outlined recruitment plans covering engineering posts in civil and mechanical disciplines.

“In the Water Resources Department, 870 assistant engineers will be recruited, including engineers in civil and mechanical disciplines, along with 16 junior engineers. During the previous term, the department provided employment to 2,815 candidates,” he said.

The Chief Minister said increased government investment in roads, drinking water schemes and embankments had created opportunities for engineering graduates and diploma holders who had previously faced uncertainty over recruitment.

Sarma said the state government had also accelerated promotions for serving employees over the past six months.

Faster promotions, he said, would create more entry-level vacancies while enabling younger personnel to move into senior positions and helping maintain institutional continuity.

Earlier, while addressing rallies in Barak Valley on April 3, Sarma had promised two lakh government jobs and announced plans to establish more co-districts in the region.

The employment pledge formed part of the ruling party’s broader campaign pitch ahead of the Assembly elections.
