Nepal Gen Z Protest : Authorities on Tuesday imposed an indefinite curfew in Nepal’s capital city Kathmandu, reintroducing restrictions just hours after an earlier order was lifted. The Kathmandu District Administration Office issued the curfew orders effective from 8:30 am until further notice, covering the entire capital city.
The decision was taken to bring the situation under control following clashes between security forces and youth groups over a social media ban on Monday, which left 19 dead and over 300 injured. The previous curfew expired at 5:00 am.
Nepal is witnessing one of its deadliest waves of civil unrest in recent years as protests over a government-imposed social media ban spiral into violent confrontations with security forces. What began as youth-led demonstrations against restrictions on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X has now transformed into a full-blown nationwide movement, marked by chants against corruption, fiery clashes, and a mounting death toll.
On Monday, thousands of Gen Z protesters flooded the streets of Kathmandu demanding that the government immediately lift the ban on social media, which has been in place since Friday after authorities blocked 26 “unregistered” sites. The ban, widely condemned as an attempt to stifle free expression and dissent, triggered confusion and anger among citizens, particularly young people who rely on these platforms for communication and activism.
