Along with a decent growth in retail sales, Indian auto market shows a strong uptake for electric and other alternative-energy powertrains

The Indian auto market saw a record-breaking August this year, with sales reaching a new all-time high of 24,23,201 units. Compared to the same month last year, registrations were up 17.51% year-on-year, and that’s according to the latest retail data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

From two-wheelers to passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles, decent growth was seen across various automobile segments in India last month. Two-wheelers alone also recorded their biggest-ever August, seeing a 19.69 year-on-year growth and reaching 17,14,610 units.

The share of electric models in two-wheeler sales crossed 10% for the first time in a non-festive month, reaching 10.68%. This could be an early indicator of electric powertrains becoming the new normal in the two-wheeler segment in India. With Navratri and Diwali approaching, demand could increase significantly over the next two months. However, only sustained momentum after the typical festive-season surge would provide a clearer picture of the growing acceptance of the zero-emission technology.

Commercial vehicles saw a 14.45% year-on-year rise in sales in India this August, reaching 90,769 units. Three-wheelers witnessed a much lower year-on-year growth of 8.64%, with 1,22,281 units registered. While only 5.18% of the commercial vehicles sold were electric models, in the case of three-wheelers, that figure stood at a whopping 65.30%. Three-wheelers have consistently been showing the highest EV penetration across automobile segments in the country.

Tractor sales grew just 0.84% year-on-year in August 2026, reaching 87,977 units. Wheeled construction equipment saw a 31.45% year-on-year growth in sales, reaching 5,166 units. Moving to passenger vehicles, 4,02,398 units were registered last month. Like for two-wheelers, this was the best-ever August for passenger vehicles, with the previous highest being under 4 lakh units. Compared to August 2025, sales were up 16.14%.

For the first time, sales of CNG, hybrid, and electric models combined were higher than conventional ICE passenger vehicles – 41.95%, albeit only by 1.1%. CNG models had a share of 25.28%, hybrid models contributed 9.04%, and electric models accounted for 7.63% of the volume. This, too, suggests a growing acceptance of alternative-energy powertrains in the Indian auto market, especially hybrid and electric.
